Eco-friendly Handloom Denim fabric in its full glory…

Handloom denim is denim fabric woven on manually operated looms, using mill-spun yarn. It will not be out of place here, to define denim as well.

Denim is a very densely constructed fabric, which has conventionally been made from 100% cotton yarn, in which the warp (length-wise yarns) is dyed, and the weft (width-wise yarns) is un-dyed. Moreover, the weaving of the yarns has to in three-up-one-down sequence (the weft passed over three and under one warp yarns) which generates the typical diagonal (twill) line so distinctly visible in denim fabric.

Also known as a warp-faced fabric, denim has a different color on the face and back side of the fabric. The face is primarily the color of warp yarns, and the back side of the fabric is much lighter in color. This difference is very easy to make out in one look, as seen in the picture above.

Every inch of the eco-friendly handloom denim fabric that we make has the “selvedge” on both ends, along the length of the fabric.

The selvedge is one of the proofs to establish that the fabric has been woven on non-automatic looms in which the fly-shuttle carries the weft yarn from one edge of the fabric to the other, and back. The mass-produced (industrial) denim fabric, woven on automatic looms, does not have this neat and clean selvedge and comes with frayed ends of the weft yarn.

This highly eco-friendly avtaar of denim has got a very soft hand-feel, and is very comfortable to wear. Unlike industrially produced denim, handloom denim is soft by birth. The warp used for weaving on automatic looms has to be sized very heavily so that it can sustain the very high level of stress during weaving. Add to that the dense construction (high density of warp and weft) and the resulting fabric is quite stiff with very poor breathability. In contrast, since handloom denim is woven using manual power, the warp requires less of sizing, and much softer yarn can be used for weaving this type of denim.

It will not be out of place to mention that handloom denim is a socially responsible fabric as it helps in keeping alive the craft of handloom weaving and enables the traditional weaving crafts-persons to earn a decent living and keep the tradition alive. The entire family of the weaver – including the women – gets involved in the process of fabric production.

Handloom denim has a very low, almost negligible, carbon foot-print, as the entire process of making the fabric is carried out without using electricity and without burning any other fuel.

Handloom Denim by Denim Club is crafted specially for the denim lovers who care!!! You can buy handloom denim fabric from our online store, or from our showroom in New Delhi.
