It is common knowledge that the concern for environment has been growing, and, more and more consumers, across the globe, are asking for eco-friendly products. We, at Slow Made, feel that we should also be making our proverbial ‘drop in the ocean’ contribution to the fast evolving causes of sustainability and environment.
“Even if a very miniscule percentage of demand for denim is met from this channel, handmade denim, it will go a long way in offering a sustainable yet fashionable product, while at the same time generate employment for a very large number of traditional craftsmen.”
– Rajesh Dudeja, Founder, Denim Club India.
Late Mr. Rajesh Dudeja, (http://rajesh.dudeja.com) the founder of Denim Club, toyed with the idea of experimenting with weaving of denim on handlooms for quite some time.
This quest for a single solution for meeting multiple objectives resulted in the launch of the Handloom Denim Initiative to weave denim by hand in the villages by engaging weavers who were looking at abandoning the age old craft. Post the sudden and unfortunate demise of Mr. Rajesh Dudeja, the handloom denim initiative is being taken forward by Slow Made India.
DENIM OF THE
FUTURE
The Handloom Denim Initiative, is a small step towards preserving the Indian culture and helping the weavers in keeping alive their traditional skill and craft, and ensuring their livelihoods, while making available an eco-friendly, socially responsible fashion fabric.
HANDLOOM DENIM
INITIATIVE
As a part of HDI, we promote the use of hand-made denim fabrics for making apparel and other items, provides hand-holding and guidance for setting up hand-made denim production facilities, provides equipment and training to faculty and students of educational institutes, and helps traditional weavers in modifying their looms and learning to weave denim.
We also work very closely with fashion designers, making handloom / khadi denim fabric available to them for their collections.
We continue to invest in further research and development, perfecting the art, craft, and techniques for making superior, eco-friendly denim, in most environment friendly ways. We currently offer several unmatched varieties of authentic 3×1 twill weave handloom selvedge denim, which are our specialty, and you will not get these from any other producer of handloom denim.
